The Gulf Central District Newsletter
Greetings!

Dr. John Powers
As I mentioned in last November's newsletter, I do a periodic gratitude list.  It helps me stay in touch with God's grace- to be reminded that I am a debtor and that I have much to be thankful for.  I find myself reflecting again on the blessings of life.  A few days ago I buried my Dad.  I loved him and will miss him.  I am grateful for his love and support.  He was there for me during some very difficult times.  I am also grateful for our last days together.  They were spent in the intensive care unit, three days, Dad bleeding internally from an inoperable abdominal aneurism.  The last day, a Saturday, we watched football all day.  After two days of only being allowed clear liquids, the doctor said Dad could have some solid food.  I immediately headed to Steak-N-Shake for Dad's favorite food- a chocolate milkshake, from his favorite food group- ice cream.  Dad's last day of life was relatively comfortable (the hospital staff kept him relatively pain free) and it was spent the way he would want it, with his son watching football, drinking a chocolate milkshake. We also expressed our appreciation and love for each other.  That night he died.  I will miss him.  But I am thankful for the life we had together, and I am thankful for our last day together.

In a few weeks we will all celebrate Thanksgiving.  I will say a little prayer of thanksgiving for Dad on that day.  I hope and pray you will explore your reservoir of blessings and be in an attitude of gratitude toward the source of all life and all blessings.

May God bless you.

John

p.s. Thank you for the many expressions of love and sympathy to me and my family over the last few weeks.  I am very grateful.

From the Church Mouse:
"Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. It is a choice based on the knowledge that we belong to God and have found in God our refuge and our safety and that nothing, not even death, can take God away from us. Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing--sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death--can take that love away."  --Henri Nouwen
